I folled the instructions and tips I can find. I pinned it to my toolbar, but for some reason it is grayed out and wonk let me select it no matter what I do
Fontwork creates an “independent” object including graphic text. So there is no direct connection to your flat text contents.

If I open the drawing tools and start Fontwork the icon is not greyed out even some ordinar flat text is selected… and Fontwork starts immediately after clicking the icon…
