Why do images disappear when saving in an .doc extension

My images are disappearing in .doc extensions. I can reproduce this issue easily.

  1. Using the default Snipping tool in Windows 10, i capture an image and copy it in to the clipboard.
  2. Open up a new Writer document. Use CTRL-V to paste the image. The image appears in the document, click save.
  3. Saving it as .ODT (this works, image appears when reopening up the document)
  4. Saving it as .DOC (this does NOT work, image disappear in the document)

Note: Tools > View settings > Display images and objects is checked. Nothing was changed in settings (all default).

I cannot confirm the issue on my installation. Opening a document containing an image captured by “Snipping tool” and saved in .doc format shows up when opening document in Word and LibreOffice.

Using

Calc: threaded

I have figured out the problem and resolved it. First I logged into another user account to see if the other user was getting the same issue. A new pop up/warning came up that I forgot/haven’t seen in awhile:

“Confirm File Format” (contains content that cannot be saved in the current format)

My additional problem was that my user account unchecked the “Ask when not saving in ODF format”, hence I didn’t notice this was happening.

After selecting “Use DOC Format”, I am able to see images in both file type extension. Thank you and hope this helps.

Actually, your real problem was that you have created your files in a way that you didn’t describe: right-clicking in Windows Explorer, and choosing “New”->DOC. That is a shortcut from MS Office (?), but not form LibreOffice; the file created that way is not a valid DOC, but an empty file (of size 0), which only can be detected as plain text by LibreOffice, and thus only plain text data may be saved in it.

See tdf#120822 and tdf#123476.

You’re right, but I use right clicking frequently due to the location of where I need to be in a folder. This right context menu was created when I installed the application. Thanks for the additional info.
