Why does Libreoffice freeze when moving over graphs in calc?

Issue:
I was going through an old libreoffice file I made and discovered that when I moved over some graphs, Libreoffice would freeze. I looked at the CPU usage through the gnome monitor when scrolling over the graph, one CPU core would max out for a few minutes, and then return to normal. The graph consists of 1999 data points (x and y values). The graph (and file) was made around the time that Libreoffice 3.5 was being used.

Question:
Is this performance issue because of the amount of data that needs to be processed by my (weak) CPU? An issue with libreoffice that will be addressed in the future?

are you able to manipulate and re-save the graphs? at that point, do you continue to have these problems?
