Why is Calc sorting so illogical?

I highlight a column and click Sort Ascending. A popup asks if I want it to Extend Selection. I would think maybe 1 in 1000 times a user would NOT want that to occur. When you sort columns online is there ever a time where you would want the end result to be a jumbled mess because rows were not sorted along with the column you highlighted? What kind of mental asylum do LibreOffice designers come from? It’s truly beyond belief. So many aspects of this program make so little sense. It’s like they’re living in an alternative universe where they cheerily ignore all conventions.

So is there a way to make the Extend Selection a default sorting procedure, like sane people would want? That popup is ridiculous and wastes our time and you know someone is going to mess up and click away and mess up their document as all their columns would be scrambled. You just can’t make this stuff up. Yes I know there’s an autobackup function. At least they didn’t forget that.

Yes. Just click on a single cell in the column then click Sort Ascending; the entire contiguous range will be included in the sort. This works for Calc back to 6.4.7.2 at least.

If you have already selected a range of cells then probably you want that range sorted. Calc gives you an option to extend the range if you want more than your current selection sorted.

Can we finally ban the character out of here?

I’m the one.

  1. Version A: Sorry I am stupid enough to prefer my explicit choice…
  2. Version B: Can someone help me find offensive nonsense to throw at the 999 who prefer something else and at the developers not abandoning the prompt and make my choice manadtory?
