Will the Fresh PPA roll-up to LibreOffice 7?

I am using Mint 20 and I have LibreOffice Version 6.4.6.2, that was just installed today (8/13/2020) from the “fresh” PPA. The option exists now to upgrade to version 7 by using the “ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-7-0” PPA. Will the “fresh” PPA eventually roll-up to version 7 of LibreOffice?

In the meantime, I will be running an experiment. I am letting my current version of LibreOffice (6.4.6.2) run its course with the “fresh” PPA.

Hello

If you are talking about this PPA sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa then the answer is “yes” it will be updated automatically if I understand the following correctly:

PPA description

LibreOffice test builds and backports

This PPA will have what the Document Foundation calls “LibreOffice fresh”, the latest release of the newest series (but no alpha/beta releases).

Ref.: https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Hope that answers your question

That is why I was acting. The “fresh” update went to 6.4.6.2, not 7. That must mean that at some point version 7 should become “fresh”. Will 7 become “fresh” thereby allowing the upgrade?

7.0.0.3 is a release version and should be considered to be the current “fresh” version. And that’s the way Download LibreOffice | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Based on OpenOffice - Compatible with Microsoft and also https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa showed it a few seconds ago,

Your question was Will the “fresh” PPA eventually roll-up to version 7 of LibreOffice? and my answer was yes.

LibreOffice on Launchpad is not maintained by TDF but by Canonical/Ubuntu teams (and heavily re-packaged as per my opinion). Hence always expect a delay in release dates of official TDF "fresh" packages and its availability on Launchpad.

There’s already 7.0.1 and in the process of getting an RC1 for 7.0.2 and the PPA has not been updated. I wonder if the concept of “fresh” is dependent on the distro. Groovy already has v7 on that PPA but focal doesn’t, and it might not get the update? Or perhaps we’ll have to wait until the EOL of 6.4 (November 2020) to see the update… Even though TDF has a great release plan/schedule, there’s nothing like it for the PPA

I wonder if the concept of “fresh” is dependent on the distro.

Of course it is dependent on the distribution in two ways:

  1. In general distributions build their own packages from source code of LibreOffice, which takes some time after a version (its source code) has been released by TDF

  2. On Ubuntu you need to add the PPA which explicitly is dedicated to “fresh” and this means your source list file needs to be updated using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa (this is the PPA without any version numbering)

In fact this has to be addressed to PPA maintainers, if there is a too long delay for user og Ubuntu based system.

The “fresh” PPA automatically updated to LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 yesterday.
