Windows 11: LibreOffice file icons briefly appear correct, then change to generic icons

Hello,

I am using Windows 11 with LibreOffice and I am experiencing a persistent issue with file icons.

For .odt / .ods / .odp files:

  • When refreshing the Desktop or opening a folder, the correct LibreOffice icon appears for a split second
  • Immediately after, it changes to a generic document icon

Relevant details:

  • File associations are correct
  • LibreOffice repair and reinstall do not fix the issue
  • Clearing Windows iconcache and thumbcache do not fix the issue
  • The issue only happens when thumbnails are enabled in File Explorer
  • Disabling thumbnail previews prevents the issue, but is not a real solution
  • This is not related to OneDrive

System:

  • Windows 11
  • Local Desktop (not synced)
  • LibreOffice version: 25.8.4

It appears to be a Windows 11 File Explorer icon/thumbnail cache issue that overrides the correct application icon after initial load.

Is this a known issue, and is there any recommended fix or workaround?

Thank you.

thank you very much. do i need to disable “Save preview image with this document” for each file individually or is there a general option?

The option is per-document. For new documents, you can create a template, where the option is set as you need; and you can set that template as default. But for existing documents, you can only change it one by one (of course, that one-by-one processing could be automated by a macro which would open files and set the option; or even possibly a macro bound to an opening event that would check and define the option for every opened document). Options are many, but you see the principle.

But just not installing the explorer extension could be an easier option (sure, that would mean also missing other things that the extension handles, like full-text search from the shell).
