I’m writing a document using Writer that would work best if I used a few short video clips to use as a “show and tell”.
Using the top menu Insert/Media/Video, I’ve tried inserting mp4, mpeg and avi but all come back as “Warning: The format of the selected video is not supported”.
I’ve searched with Google and YouTube but there’s scant information available and nothing that’s helped.
I’m running Win11 with the most recent version of LibreOffice 24.8.4.2

Do you have VLC installed? Previously, installing a third party video reader such as VLC enabled third party codec support that could be found by LibreOffice.
This never worked on Windows, even though there was an experimental project of enabling that - abandoned long ago, and IIRC, we even purged the bit-rotten code.

Yes I have VLC. I downloaded it 2 days ago.
If I’m reading that correctly, I should give up trying since it’s most definitely not a feature that Writer supports?
If that’s the case, it begs the question how people on YouTube are able to insert video.

After my original post yesterday, I’ve been away from the computer and replying to the e-mail alerts I’ve received. From my phone, I’ve looked through every message and this is the first I’ve received from you (EarnestAI).
That said, I can’t understand what I don’t receive.
It’ll be interesting to see if I’m able to see your earlier comment when I get back to my laptop and read the refreshed message board.
I’ll also download the codec pack you linked. Since I’m a computer dummy and the word codec just entered my world 3 days ago, what will this codec pack do for me/change?

It adds several codecs to your OS, so it knows more file formats and can decode them. This can/should help with the message “format of the selected video is not supported”, because it adds support.

You should look at the site.
I’ve clicked on download in the left menu of the page that opens via your link. It then takes me to the page where a breakdown of the different variants can be found. I clicked Download Standard. I’m then taken to a page where it says “The Standard variant of the codec pack is what we recommend for the average user.” with a blue download extension button. It then opens a new tab (get.safersearches.net) with a pop-up that says “Before you download: Click continue to start the downloading process of this Firefox add-on. This Firefox add-on modifies your default search provider, powered by Yahoo, and aims to enhance your search experience.”
I was under the impression I was downloading files/program that were “upgrading” my LibreOffice so I can embed video in a Writer document. Since this download is clearly says “This Firefox add-on modifies your default search provider” which will “enhance your search experience” I’m questioning whether a) - the link I opened is legit, and b) - did I follow the correct path to upgrade my L.O. Writer to enable video embedding?
Did you even look at what you clicked? I don’t know if you have used the internet since 1985 but ads that include dubious downloads are common on just about all websites these days. You are responsible for looking at what you are doing; it isn’t going to get safer any time soon.

Yes, I look ALWAYS look VERY closely at what I click on. As I did for this download. See the K-Lite Codec Pack in the left side menu? And the Download link below that? I clicked on that and it brought me to the page you see in the picture.

I clicked on both of those and both took me to the dubious page that’s described above.
So…
#1 - I’ve obviously been an Internet user since 1985 because the page that loaded didn’t seen right and I stopped and then asked here.
#2 - As for responsibility, I did the responsible thing by stopping, questioning the legitimacy of the site then asking about it here
#3 - since I’m not a Codec Guide user and I’m not familiar with the interface, how would I know that the two things saying Download, directly in the middle of Codec Guide instructions would be of the nefarious type?
With that said, where and how did you get the download window you’ve posted?
And lastly, you can stop it with the belittling commentary that speaks to me as if I’m 9yrs old. I may not be a computer wiz like you and be knowledgeable about codec and other computer wizardy but I’m here and humble enough to admit that I don’t know the answer and I need to ask questions to learn. Not be treated to and talked to like a child.
What preferred video player should I choose? I use Windows default Media Player but I don’t watch videos often so I’m not picky as a watcher. But if one format vs another in the Preferred Video Player pull-down would serve me better than another, I’m all ears.
