Writer doesn't save page styles

Alright. This is downright frustrating. I’m trying to write a book, and this is making me miss MS Office. I create my page styles, I use them, even, and then I save the document. Close Writer, come back later and all the new styles that I created are missing. Is this because I’m saving as docx?

Using LO:
Version: 7.2.3.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 20(Build:2)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.13; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Ubuntu package version: 1:7.2.3-0ubuntu0.21.10.1
Calc: threaded

Is this because I’m saving as docx?

I think so.

It could be a compatibility problem between ODT and DOCX.

Basically:

Recommendation for clean working with LibreOffice when different Office programs are used.
Always create and save your files in LibreOffice and save them in ODF format (ODT, ODS, etc.).
Always keep these files as their source.
If you need other formats for distribution to partners, you can open an ODF file and save and distribute another format with ″ Save as… ″.
This way, you always have working files available in your system environment.

To add to @Hrbrgr’s answer, M$ Word knows only of paragraph styles (and in a model different from LO Writer, which means not all settings can be kept when converting). Character, page and list styles are translated into direct formatting because M$ format has no corresponding objects to save your settings.
