Writer - how to split pictures "linewise"

I often work with pdf-scans of foreign (asian) languages to translate them.

It would be useful to paste a whole .pdf-page as an imgae into the writer.
Then i need a tool to divide this picture into “lines” (of the foreign text),so i can write my translation between these “lines”.

Does anyone know a funktion or tool to split a picture into parts (at least 2).

(i don’t want to copy the whole picture again for each line and mask the not-wanted. This will result in a huge file. Btw thats the Word-mode)

An alternative which pop my mind is to use the Screenshot Captor from

I have marked up this answer by @ROSt53 as the method of using a screenshot tool is platform agnostic and even simpler under GNU/Linux, which includes equivalent tools by default. Either copy your appropriately re-sized PDF-viewer window, or select the specific area of text you require.

Possible workflow alternative:

  • Open pdf in a reader program.
  • Work in select mode.
  • Capture a line of pdf to clipboard as picture.
  • Paste into Writer and add intermediate lines as needed.

Good luck

It might also be possible to use the ImageMagick scripting language to split an image by whitespace. See Magick Scripting Language: [[www.linux-nantes.org/~fmonnier/ocaml/ml-conjure/documentation.php]] and [[Fred's ImageMagick Scripts]]

That’s just the method i use now. Doing this for hundreds of lines is rather boring.
But my hope was, to get a tool, where i can point to the “split-line” , click->tata! : there is the new free line. to enter text.
