Writer: Improve compatibility with Word docx files?

I have a PDF document that contains 200 pages of tables (sometimes with 4 on a page). It has been converted into a DocX file via Acrobat. When I open the file in Word for Mac, the document appears perfectly. But in Libre Office Writer, the tables are the wrong size and overlapping on each other.

Are there any tricks or tips I can use to make the docX file open better in Writer?

The reason I’d like to use Libre Office Writer is because Word for Mac isn’t that great. It hangs while moving through pages, while Libre Office Writer just zips through. (Apple Pages doesn’t have all the functionality of Libre Office).

Environment: Libre Office Version: 6.2.5.2 On Mac OS X 10.14.5

Looks like you are facing some bugs if DOCX support in Writer. These should be reported to the bug tracker, attaching a sample document which demonstrates the problem.

The matter is that your file is not a genuine DOCX file (i. e. generated by Word), but a file generated by a third-party program. Thus, it is not clear if the bug is in LO or in Acrobat (in the latter case, Word may just tolerate the bug while LO won’t). Besides, the file may even be other format. For example, ABBYY FineReader saves files with a .doc name extension being in reality RTF files. Hit F12 (for Save As…) in Word to reveal the true file format.

And yes, if the file is a real DOCX, try, as Mike Kaganski points, submitting it to the tracker.

As for advise, try using ABBYY FineReader to convert the PDF file and save directly to ODT.
