Writer is loosing text language setting

I would like to use the spell checking for Dutch. When I do have a spelling error in the document, and presses F7, the spellcheck is opens the “Spelling: Dutch (Netherlands)” window, with as Text language: Dutch (Netherlands). The spelling error is shown and I can click on a suggestion, and click the “correct” button. This works fine. At the bottom status bar the language of my document is set into Dutch(Netherlands). So all seems to work fine.

But after the spelling error is corrected, and I press F7 again, the text language is lost. This is very annoying. Of course the document contains no spelling errors anymore, but this is not obvious.

I have search on this forum and in the manual but I could not find a solution. I work with LO version 7.0.4.2 and Ubuntu 20.04

It is lost specifically where? In the dialog’s control? That is normal, because the dialog shows the language of the text that it currently operates on (where the error is found), and when there’s no errors, there’s no text which language it would show.

@mikekaganski That is confusing to me. I want to be sure that there are no spelling errors in my text. And that is only possible within a specific language. If I would write “tekst” it is a spelling error in English, but correct in Dutch.

This is only confusing because you do not consider, that there’s no “document” language, only “specific text portion” language. It might sometimes happen that all text portions have the same language, but that’s just a special case. Generally, the program goes through all the text; for each portion, it obtains its language; it uses that language’s spellchecker/grammar checker; and if there’s a problem reported by those, it stops, shows the related information (the place in text, the language used for that text; the suggestion, the possible actions…) - but again, that are the properties of the specific place in the text.

I do get a language is assigned to a specific selection of the text. If I select a few line and check Menu → Tools → Language → For selection Dutch is marked with a check. So this seems OK. But when pressing F7, for the same selected text, the language setting is lost again.

You seem to not listen. When you select anything, and press F7, the dialog only shows you the language of a problematic text. It does not check if your selection contains a single-language portions or not; it simply does not show you an error - hence there’s no information about the error’s language. Period.

I get your point, I hope. But to me it is confusing. If I would ask you to check my calculation of 2 + 3 = 4, You would say I am wrong, so I can correct it. When I ask for 2 + 3 = 5 you could say this is OK, than I am sure it is a correct calculation. I have 100% proof my calculation would be correct. But when there is no answer, I could be OK, with my calculation, but might be wrong but you do do not have time to answer me. I do not have proof my calculation is OK. That is confuses my, but I do have to except LO works this way. Thanks for your answer.
