Writer: limit save as file types/formats

Windows 11, LO 25.2.0.3

I appreciate the number of file formats Writer can save in, but in practice, I only use a handful - ODT, DOC, DOCX, RTF* (as well as exports to PDF and XHTML).

It’s time consuming to search through the format list for DOC every time (esp. because it’s not particularly near DOCX).

Is there a way to:

  1. Limit the options to just my three favorites (ideally retaining the option to use others through a submenu or something).
  2. Sort the list so that my preferred options are on top?
  • Yes, I know that Word should be able to open ODTs. Some people I send files to insist on DOC, DOCX, or RTF.

You can uncheck Automatically select filename extension in the save dialog and add it manually in the Name: entry box. It is only a matter of typing 4-5 characters on first save.

By the way, which is your OS and LO version?

Try:

Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Load/Save > General there at
Settings for default file format and ODF - Always save as: doc or docx

Win 11, LO 25.2

I save among 3-4 different file formats, so setting the default doesn’t really answer my need. Typing the extension by hand is one possibility, though I still would think there must be some way to edit or sort the available file formats.

I just tried with Writer. The result is a document with mime type “application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text” and file name extension “.docx”.

@Villeroy works for me here: I untick the box and add manually .doc. Command file --mime-type … gives application/msword.

Fedora 41 (linux), LO 24.8.5.2

$ file --mime-type lorem.doc
lorem.doc: application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text

I suggest to download and install MultiFormatSave https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/multisave-1
You will see in File menu Multisave and you can choose from there
