I’m using EndeavourOS, LO 24.2.4.2. I can save a Writer doc as .odt no problem but when trying to save as a Word .docx the file produced is a zip file with no readable document.
Has anyone seen this before?

If you save as doxc what is the file extension, docx or zip?
Normally ODT and DOCX are zip files internally. You can change the Extend ODT in a zip and examine the file, but only do it with one copy.
Saves them as zip archive. When I open that folder there are 3 folders and 1 file…
_rels folder = 1 item
docProps folder = 2 items
word folder = 6 items
Content_Types.xml
You can rename the file from .zip to .docx.
Or drag the zip file into an office window. LibreOffice will handle the zip properly.
In the LibreOffice “Save As” dialog, make sure that “automatic file name extension” is checked.
