Elliptical placeholder to hold an image

I am trying to place an image of my father into writer, the preferential shape is elliptical, I am not very savvy with this type of thing, any help would be great.

Please explain “placeholder” in more details.

I am trying to have ellipitcal picture frame in my templates, I do not know how to send a file so you can see

I have tried to have the other examples work, though I am not having much luck.I am getting a box with an icon of 3 cubes, blue, yellow, orange incolour, with the wording Image1, nothing elase happening.

thanks for trying to help me I am so frustrated with this

is it possible for me to send you an image some how of what we are getting here, when we try various attempts

If I understood correctly, you won’t get a placeholder in your sense without using (at least one) a frame for each image/postion. Frames are always rectangular, however. Of course, you may insert an elliptic shape as an eye-catcher in addition.

Have a look into this attached demo to see if it helps you to achieve your goals.

Editing: Attach another example.

hi thanks for help - it is what I am looking for, I cant get it to happen, is there any way you can explain exactly what goes on to make it work, please

I still dont’t know for sure whether you want to replace the elliptic shape or to assign an image to the Area of the shape as a kind of decoration in one of the selectable modes. If the second is what you want, you need to understand that the shape cannot be a frame for an image in the technical sense. The image has to be converted into a bitmap for the purpose. I do not know all the details myself, and depend on trial-and-hopefully-not-too-much-error heavily.

I am an old teacher, but not so much an author of so called tutorials in an up-to-date style. To do it in this case would cost me some hours at least, I’m afraid. And it cannot be done reasonably by posting in this breathlessly running ticker of “question-answer-next question”. Too much effort for too little effect. My way would be to talk at the phone while both of us sit in front of their computers.

how do I send you an image Wolfgagng

I am happy to send you my email address, though it may not be ok, by the rules

Hi

  • You can insert e.g. an ellipse with the Insert Basic Shapes tool (Standard toolbar).
  • Rigth click the shape▸Add Text Box.
  • Now, you can click in the text box to insert the placeholder: InsertFieldMore FieldsFunctions tab▸PlaceholderImage.
  • You can protect the postion of the shape: Rigth click the shape▸Position and SizePosition tab.

Note: By default, the inserted image will be in the frame formed by the text box (it does not occupy the entire ellipse). It is of course possible to edit the contour…

See PlaceHolder.odt

[EDIT]

Here’s what the document should look like

Regards

thanks for the help - it is not working, I am getting a box, with an icon 3 cubes and the word Image 1 - not sure what I am doing wrong

@mikesydwest - If you have downloaded, saved, and then opened the document, you must have an ellipse inserted with text around. In the middle of the ellipse is the image placeholder. Click on it to select the image.

when I go and select the image, all i get is a box with a a 3 cube icon and the wording, Image1, it cant be manipulated from there

I have re-downloaded the PlaceHolder.odt attachment. It works normally. I added a screenshot of what should be displayed. If not, I can not help you more, sorry…

we have acheived this - though we are left with a box with no image just icon.

There is no image there, how do we get the image to appear
