How can one curve text around a shape
You need to enable the "old" fontwork tool, which is not enabled by default.
Note that this is very different from the fontwork Gallery, which is enabled by default.
Now you can bring up the fontwork toolbox whenever you have an object with text. Use the top tools to select basic text placement, and adjust with the other icons.
