You need to enable the "old" fontwork tool, which is not enabled by default.

Note that this is very different from the fontwork Gallery, which is enabled by default.

  • Menu : Tools - Customize...
  • Click the Toolbars tab
  • Pick a toolbar to modify in the dropdown list (I have it on the Drawing toolbar).
  • Click the Add... button
  • Pick category Format
  • Find the Fontwork item, Icon is a leaning A on a curved line. Click Add.

Now you can bring up the fontwork toolbox whenever you have an object with text. Use the top tools to select basic text placement, and adjust with the other icons.

Sample: C:\fakepath\textoncurve.odg

@slimboyfat Be aware that @keme created text on curve in Draw, your request was Writer... Copy/paste works for you.
