Just upgraded to LibreOffice 5.0..5.2. I have large Calc files with over 200 sheets per file. When I "save as" the file, it starts to save and then a Windows dialog appears stating that LibreOffice is not responding. This dialog box continues and then looks for a solution and, not finding a solution, then shuts the program down. On the previous LibreOffice versions, when I saved the file it would state that "LibreOffice" was not responding, but then it would complete saving the file normally. This is a real irritation since I cannot save my file when I make any changes. I would appreciate any suggestions you have. Thank you.

Please try resetting the user profile, sometimes solves strange issues. Usually it's enough renaming/deleting the file "user/registrymodifications.xcu", it affects all the options in Menu/Tools/Options, and the files "user/basic/dialog.xlc" and "scrip.xlc" are overwritten, additionally custom colors in "user/config/standard.soc" are lost.

Try this

1 File > New > Spreadsheet ..., and create an empty spreadsheet

2 Insert > From File ..., and navigate to the file which crashes and choose it

3 Save the resulting file.

Have a look - the new file is probably significantly smaller in size than the original file. Files edited many times seem to get "tangled" and this "un-tangles" them by removing redundant junk. The response time when you edit will probably be significantly improved.

Met this problem for the first time, this year 2020 using Calc Saving a (very) large file, the Ubuntu 18.04 disk cache went up and up and LibreOffice crashed when cache reached 5.6GB every time. I couldn't work nor save work.

LO isn't the official package for Ubuntu 18.04, but I ran out of ideas so installed it (can be purged or reverted). Large file saving works every time here with LO

I go as far as files of 102MB. LO 7 hesitates just at the last stage of saving yet does the job.

Note: LO 7 has some strategic parameters about handling "very large sheets" which seem to be related to millions of rows and many more columns. I don't touch that nor the options. Just installed as is and used it. It does seem, however, to have modified software whether the options are selected or not that enable better (and faster) saves.
