Looked at this answer " Cannot get Calc to use dates for x-axis" and found it could have been suitable for me. However following the answer I cannot find the type combo in scale tab. I am using Calc 24.8.4.2.
I would like the x-axis to have actual dates and the first and last not to be there as they are not relevant to the data.

Sorry, no answer - just passing by, and couldn’t resist: thank you for the nicely reference in question. Too often people don’t provide enough context, writing things like “searching the internet, I found an answer, but it doesn’t work”…
Would be even better, if you also added a sample ODS 
- that enables others to not waste time reproducing things just to start seeing what you see

Explored further and found "Using date as X-axis on plot "
This has a single data set where as I want to have two data sets.
However exploring with this does show the type combo with a single data set and when the second is added the scale page shown above appears.
Can create two graphics, one on top of the other, making the top one have a transparent background.
