Deleting contents entries

Unwanted contents entries cannot be deleted. If deleted from the list itself they reappear.
Unlike with an index they are not greyed out in the text.so cannot use Edit > Reference.

To get an ad-hoc advice, edit your question (modify it, don’t use a comment) to provide more information: OS name, LO version and save format.
You likely format your document manually, except perhaps for Heading n paragraphs to structure the document and enter these paragraphs into the TOC. Some of your paragraphs may be erroneously styled Heading n, making them reappear in the TOC every time you regenerate it. There are other ways to enter paragraphs to the TOC.

Attach a sample file (max. 1-2 page) exhibiting the bad behaviour.

Here is an example. The contents have been determined by highlighting and entering ctrl 1,2 or 3. Now how do I delete one if I made a mistake?
contents delete.odt (32.5 KB)

Ctrl 0 works fine. Didn’t see that in the guide?
I have baulked at styles. I will take your advice and study avidly!

Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+4 style a paragraph as Heading 1 to Heading 4, attaching them to the designated outline level (and inserting them into the TOC).

To revert a paragraph to “ordinary” text, press Ctrl+0 (control zero) to style it Text Body.

PS:
Your sample file is direct formatted, i.e. you modified typographical attributes like font face, size or weight with toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts. Don’t do that, this will complicate your life when you’ll want to tune your formatting. Instead configure adequately the styles, paragraph and character ones mainly.

If styles sound Klingon to you, I recommend you read the Writer Guide to get an idea about them.
