Docx and Doc don't show column line

When I open a ‘Word 2010’ created ‘docx’ or ‘doc’ file in Libre Writer it doesn’t show the in between column line.
However if I save the document to ‘odt’ in ‘Word 2010’ and then opening in ‘Libre Writer’ it shows the exact document.
.
Operating system is Windows 11 Pro.
My Libre version is 5.0.2.0.4

Is this a bug?

That is an ancient version, there have been many bug fixes in the last 10 years.

Maybe you have a good reason for using such an old version. If so, you could install a parallel version for other work, see Installing in parallel on Windows - The Document Foundation Wiki

[Edit ]
If I create a 2 column document in Word 2010 and specify a line between the columns, it does not show in Word but it shows in Writer 25.8.3.2
2ColumnsLineBetween.docx (25.3 KB)
.

BTW Always save and work in LibreOffice native format, .odt in this case. Every time you open a document or save it there is a conversion between .docx and .odt, these multiple conversions can lead to corruption eventually as attributes not supported by one or other of the formats are removed during conversion.
If you need to send a document to someone else then File > Save a copy as .docx and send that but do not use that docx for further editing.

I downloaded ‘Libre Office 25.2.7.2 x86 portable’ and now the line is visible.
However now it messes up the text.

Can you upload a sample document with messed up text and a screenshot or description of how you expect the text to appear.

Yes sure:

The upper screenshot is Microsoft Office how it should be.
The lower screenshot is what Libre makes of it.

I’ve to admit it’s not big…

O I see, the screenshot isn’t correct. I mixed ‘doc’ with ‘docx’.
Now it’s right…

No sample document, no formatting marks shown, not much to analyse.
.

If those are four lines verses, then why isn’t there a paragraph break between verses 2 and 3? In the sample below, there are line breaks at the end of each line and a paragraph break at the end of each verse.

(Edit: removed direct formatting from OCR’d document)

I don’t even understand your question (or comment).
I only know the opened ‘Microsoft Office docx’ is different than the ‘Libre Writer’ one.

This is the original document.

It is accidental that the the lines broke where they did in Word, if there were 5 verses then a verse would have been split. I don’t have your font and have only Word 2010 so cannot see what you see in your version of Word.
I strongly suggest that you turn on formatting marks, click View > Formatting marks to see the paragraph breaks. Then you can add an empty paragraph between the second and the third verse as has been done between the other verses.

You can make it look the same in Writer:

  1. Right click in the text and select Edit Section
    EditSection130139
  2. In the Edit Sections dialogue that opens, click the Options button
  3. In the Columns Tab, tick the box Evenly distribute contents to all columns. OK out

My point is that Libre doesn’t open an exact duplicate of the same file.

Your solution did the job but the upper and lower margins are now slightly off.
More margin at the bottom and the top margin is less…

In the ‘OP’ I’ve mentioned I have Microsoft Office 2010 just as you.

The “not exact duplicate opening of docx bug” isn’t a big deal. Just mentioning…

‘Softmaker Free Office 2024’ does actually open an exact duplicate of the docx file.

Anyway, thank you for your extensive trying answering my question.

Apart from a different choice of substitute font your document looks pretty much the same in my Word and in my Writer.

Writer was never intended to be a clone of Word. Rather it is a word processor in its own right with somewhat better DTP layout options. If you need a Word clone then you should use Word but note that different versions of Word and on different operating systems may give different layouts than expected.

If you want exact layout the that is what pdf is for.

Thanks again…

However, the fun part is that I was looking for a ‘Word’ to ‘Pdf’ converter that would create an exact copied flattened ‘Pdf’.
‘Microsoft Office Word 2010’ exports only a non-searchable Pdf.
I stumbled on ‘Libre’ but then the inaccurate thingy happened.
Not long after opening this topic on this forum I discovered that ‘Softmaker Free Office’ does it well.
