Footing gradient

I adjust footing gradient so that the left pages gradient is the opposite of right pages. It seems to work fine but after I save and close the file and reopen, the change I make go away and they become the same again. May be this issue is also related to the fact that some things you do to footer format such as height doesn’t take effect until you close and open again. May be it is a bug, worth to look at. my workaround about gradient was not to use it at all but if there is a solution does anyone know it? I mean how can I make sure the gradient doesn’t change back after I save and close and reopen again?

If you save your document .doc(x), any gradient, anywhere, won’t be kept because M$ Word has no feature gradient. To fix, save in .odt format.

Note that we can only guess because your questions lacks elementary information: OS name, LO version, saving format.

OS: Windows 10
LO version: Latest, 7.1.4.2
Saving format: Of course the default libre office format. I didnt say MS word anywhere. I save in odt and this is what I got which led to my question

Edit your question to attach a 2- or 4-page sample file for technical analysis. To attach, use the paperclip tool (not available in a comment).

Sorry I cannot attach my work document. The situation is as I described. DId you try what I described and not getting the same result?

Of course, don’t attach your work document. Make a copy. Reduce it to 2 pages with the issue. Delete text and replace it with Lorem ipsum" (type lorem and immediately F3 – works in English language, may not work in other languages) with enough text to have 2 pages. Make sure the problem is still there. Attach the file to your question.

The things I did as I described above are gone. I did not save that version. And then I didn’t use gradient anymore. Did you try to test what I described?

I can’t “do as you did” because there are many ways to add a gradient. Without knowing where you applied your gradient (page, paragraph, superimposed frame, …), I can’t work on it. I am a style aficionado and almost always work with styles. I have no problem with gradients so far.

If your way of using Writer unveiled a bug, reproducing it is mandatory to have it fixed. Describe very precisely where and how you applied your gradient. Also are the page styles different for left and right pages (or at least requested so with an option)?

As I stated in my original question, I applied a footing gradient. Please read my original question again and you will be able to reproduce. Even the title of the question is footing gradient. The page styles are same for left and right pages except the margin for inner and outer which I was able to make with mirrorring, and also the page numbers are located at the outer side for both. Other than that the left and right page styles are the same. What is the relevance of page styles of left and right pages being same or differnet I am not sure, but since you asked…

And if it matters, it was the first gradient I applied . Pastel Buquet. It is from light green 4 to light red 4 by default. So lets say for odd numbered page’s footer I applied like this. Then I went to an even numbered page;s footer and made it from light red 4 to light green 4. It seemed to work and now I had footing gradient directions opposite in left and right pages. But then as i said in my question when I saved and closed the file and opened again, both odd and even pages again gradient directions were the same. I dont know how else to describe it, which is already described (although shorter) i my original question.

And I had even tried as to add new gradient definition below as opaque suggested below (he figured what I did from my original question). , but that doesn’t work either., meaning, it works at first but after I save and close the file and reopen again, the gradient directions are agin the same and the new gradient I added was also gone …

You didn’t answer to the question. Is the gradient applied to the whole page or only to the footer area? If so, have you created a frame to cover the footer or is the gradient a property of the paragraph style used in the footer? And, in this latter case, have you customized the paragraph style or applied direct formatting?

I told everything necessary and answered your questions and now you are asking new questions as if I did not answer them. And for the third time: To the footer. Opaque was able to understand even from my first message, see below his answer and picture. that is how I did it. From minute 1 you seem determined to not understand although you do. You start by operating system and assumed I saved in doc format for no reason… Do this: Go to the footer area, click on it, then the footer tab appears, right click, select “border and background” ,select the gradient option, and you reach to the screen as opaque shows below. Thats it. I did not do anything special. I did not create a frame, I dont even know what a frame means. My document is very simple. I started using libre office 3 days ago. I did not do anything with paragraph style. And if you try and make it work it is great!. Mike below says it works. Then I did something wrong here. Problem solved

I made an (ugly) sample file: AskLOgradient.odt to illustrate that your question can be understood in a variety of ways.

Note there is no issue after saving and reopening. If this sample file meets your expectation, I’ll update my answer to explain the key to success. Basically, you must understand how the style system works.

Hello

probably you missed to Add your gradient definition or to Modify an existing gradient definition:

  • make the gradient definition
  • click either Add (creates a new gradient definition/tile in pane Gradient or Modify (changes the currently selected tile in pane Gradient )

(I admit that this is a bit twisted and one would expect that changes get applied just like they have been made)

Hope that helps.

Seems to work OK here with master toward 7.3 - is it a Writer counterpart of tdf#137729?

I added a new gradient name and made it the opposite of pastel bouquet and then after save close and reopen the file not only the gradients became the same but also the gradient I added got lost. May be I am clicking somewher wrong but I am not applying the gradient anymore I will simply not do it, i cannot make it work. I
