NOTE: This is the only mechanism I can use right now to put a message on the front page. I’ll try to put up a more official-looking notice when I can edit the HTML of the site.

Update: I’ve now been able to put a notice in the sidebar of the site.

Update2: (2013-02-15) - Moderation has been disabled for a little while, and the site hasn’t exploded yet :slight_smile: I’ll keep the moderation warning on the sidebar, as we’ll use some moderation of junior users once the Askbot software is upgraded.

Hi users,

I’d like to apologize for having to enable moderation of your replies. We’ve been experiencing a TON of video/tv show/random spam and we had to enable that moderation starting this weekend. The spam has seemed to quiet down a bit, but we’re not going to lift moderation quite yet.

In the next couple of days I’m going to start whitelisting people so that you contributors don’t have to deal with the hurdles of moderation.

Thank you all for bearing with us as the Ask site experiences some growing pains. We’ll try to get the site running smoothly (and SPAM-free) as soon as possible.

This is indeed annoying… Any progress? I believe it is better to put up with (and delete) Spam than to demotivate genuine users with genuine problems…

I had noticed :slight_smile: But Moderation requires someone to be available to “release” questions without delay. As it was (no waiting) users didn’t have enough patience to wait for the answer…

I hope it’s only temporary. In any case, well done @qubit1 for acting fast.

Hi @Pedro1, Yes, I’m sincerely hoping that moderation will be temporary. I’m scouring the site backend and reading through anti-spam notes on the Askbot site to try to figure out the best way for us to tackle the spam problem

I don’t know anything about Askbot, but Google hinted it might have an Akismet plugin. Akismet is surprisingly good, it eliminated spam completely from my blog and I haven’t had a single false positive. You could try it. Just my two 0.02€.

Hi @Nicd, Thanks for the suggestion. Based on what I’ve heard from the LO admins, because LO is based in Germany & because of some laws concerning data, we probably can’t use Akismet with this site. I know – the whole thing sounds a little crazy, but there it is. We’re investigating other options.

Hi,
I always asked the question and then create a bookmark to check latter if there is some response. Now when moderation is made, I can’t bookmark my new question anymore. Is there any way I can do a bookmark and not needing to search for my post after? I am quite busy so I my also forget I asked some question.

Hi @froz, Set up notifications in your user account (click on your user name next to your karma → then click on ‘subscriptions’). Tweak your Email Subscription Settings so that you receive notifications when people post on your question or mention you (by saying @froz in an Answer or comment)

I don’t really like to have a mail subscription. I ask a lot of questions on a lot of forums, so having tons of mails is not desired. I ask question and when I have time to work with specific product (like LibreOffice), I check if something is new.

@froz, This site is designed to help answer questions posed by users of LibreOffice. If you’re asking so many questions that you don’t have time to come back and respond when people give you answers, then people will be less motivated to help you. Please be respectful of our volunteers. Thanks.
