How do I set up alternating page margins?

I’d like to have a 1" right margin on the first page, then a 1" left margin on the second page, and so on, alternating each page like that. I can’t figure out how to do it.

I tried the mirrored option for page 1, but it affected page 2 instead of page 1. How do I achieve what I want?

I am not sure what you intend to be the goal so maybe best if you try the different layout options with a sample document. The sample I made for a normal printed document with inner margins of 4 cm (1.6 ") and outer 2 cm.

Because of the topology of physical pages swapping left to right with odd and even, it can be confusing so I suggest you turn on book view.

There are various solutions to your question depending on the sophistication of your layout.

  • the first solution is outlines by @EarnestAl requiring only a single page style
  • a second solution makes use of the Gutter parameter (by still requires Mirrored option for alternation)
  • a third solution links several page styles (and you are no longer limited to simple alternation)
In the third case, the geometry of the pages are totally independent from each other, allowing a very sophisticated layout).
