How does one do this on unubtu 20-04?

Also, I agree with the commenter on the referenced response: We shouldn’t have to download all of the language packs if we know what language we want. On a fresh install of ubuntu 20-04 desktop, the downloading of all of these packs accounted for a significant overall install time.

We shouldn’t have to download all of the language packs if we know what language we want.

Two remarks:

  1. From my experience on Ubuntu this doesn’t happen. You have no additional language pack by default (and your output proves that)

  2. If the statement would be true, you’d need to turn to Ubuntu maintainers who define the packages being installed by default. You are using Ubuntu’s repositories for the installation of LibreOffice (not the TDF packages from libreoffice.org) and they make their own packaging, dependencies and defaults.

Hello,

if you want uninstall additional language packs installed on your Ubuntu system, you could use the following command in a terminal:

dpkg --list | awk '/ii/&&/libreoffice-l10n/{print $2}' | sudo xargs apt purge --yes

which lists packages, filters installed (ii) and (&&) langugage packs (libreoffice-l10n) , prints the package name only ($2) and passes the result to the remove (purge) option of the installation command (apt)-

Note(s)

  1. Your system doesn’t have any additional language pack(s) installed (as per your dpkg -l | grep libreoffice command output. You are using English (US) and this is the only language which doesn’t have an language pack, since it is the default language and the fallback language. In that sense this answer is useless for you.

  2. To see a list of available (in the repository) language packs, execute: apt search libreoffice-l10 | grep ^libreoffice-l10

Hope that helps.
