It appears the only way to create a hyperlink button to a local folder is to initially link it to a file within that folder and then use form edit mode to remove the file identifier from the target.
Is this the “normal” procedure or a bug?

A bug is something that doesn’t works as intended. What is the exact procedure that you follow, which suggests you to select a folder, but only allows to select a file?

Place the cursor in any vacant cell and use the ribbon Hyperlink button or [Ctrl]+K
Select Document from the listed functions
Using Path: Open File Dropdown > select any folder presented and Open/Return
You will be “forced” to follow the folder route until you encounter documents rather than having an opportunity to select the folder as the target
Select any document - for simplicity define it as a “button” and then enter a name in the Text panel. Putting a name in the Name panel doesn’t reproduce on the button but gives the button a “name” - presumably for advanced processing
Create the button
Now you will have to edit the Properties
In Form Design mode, right click the button and select “Control Properties”
Scroll down to URL and delete the file name leaving the final “/” directory delimiter in place
Exit Form Design Mode
NOTE: If you want to be higher in the hierarchy than the final folder you will need to find any document anywhere below your target folder and delete all the way back to the appropriate folder.
That’s why I’m uncertain whether it’s a bug, or just requires a really torturous procedure to target a folder - because it wasn’t anticipated that a user might want to target a folder to select the desired document.

So the function is called “Select Document”, which doesn’t imply that it offers you a way to select a folder, right? I do not see how could it be called a bug.

But no one prevents users from filing a feature request.

As I’ve not found any further references, I suspect it’s too esoteric - even for a feature request.
Thanks for your time.

Pretty sure this question has come up before, but I couldn’t find anything current after a quick trawl though bugzilla. Mind you, I didn’t search in the resolved/fixed/wontfix statuses.

The question has definitely come up in relation to having a button on a form open a folder in the file system to allow for user selection of a random file in a given folder.

A while ago, a similar question appears to have been asked, and answered here, through the use of macro programming:
