Inserting images and auto text in office writer

Hi
I need to insert images into reports often, but then I insert the image it comes in very large, and I have to reduce the size.
To save time I’d love to know how I can pre-set the size of the image I want to insert.
I have tried creating a table first and then getting the size of each cell right and that does seem to help, but then it’s a pain to add a comment.

Also, is there a way to add auto text, so that eg I can type in an abbreviation and it inserts the full word or phrase?
Any advice? thanks

Inserting images in a predefined size.

For this purpose, it is necessary to insert a frame into the document where the image is to be inserted later.

The frame is adjusted using the “Frame” frame style. There you make the desired settings, e.g. width = 10.00 cm. Leave the height at “Automatic” and OK.

Save the document as a document template with a suitable name.

When opening a new document from this document template, place the cursor in the frame and insert the desired image.

Do you practice styling?

Styles are a collection of settings collected under a single name. When you apply a style to a selected object, all the settings are transferred to this object, effectively formatting it as intended.

The most common styles are for paragraphs, characters and pages.

For images and other off-text-flow material, you have frame styles. This is probably what you are looking for. You may need some time before you get your desired formatting as frame styles are rather hard to master.

“Adding a comment” to an image can probably be done with Insert>Caption (after selecting the image). It depends on what you call a comment and which use you intend for it.

If you know the size of and position where you want the image (i.e. lower right side of the paragraph), you can create a custom frame style for your purpose. Insert the image into the document. With the image still selected, double click on the frame style you want to use. The image is quickly sized and positioned.

However, regarding image sizing, it is best to resize an image in an image editing application before inserting it into a writer document. Doing so will make the resulting file size of the document a small fraction of the size it would be if just inserting the image and, then, making it smaller visually.
