I got a lot of fairly long comments in my odt, right now the comment display takes about 1/6 of the width of the main text (in print layout), is there a way to increase the width of the comment section so that more comment can be displayed in one line?

Take a look at http://www.libreoffice.org/assets/Uploads/EN-Project_images/4.0NewFeatures/Writer/Comment-text-range.png, now imagine I have 10 comments per page, each comment has 5 lines, there’s not enough space on the right hand side, so each comment can only show one or two lines. I want to increase the comment panel’s width so that I can display more text in one or two lines.
It is not exactly the solution you are seeking. I haven’t found a way yet to do exactly what you are describing in your original statement, but I think that would be a very useful feature. I am also struggling with fairly long comments in my documents.
What I did to kind of circumvent this problem is to lower the User Interface Scaling in Tool>Options>LibreOffice>View>Interface Scaling>Scaling. This has made the display of long notes better in my environment. I’m running LibreOffice 4.2 in Ubuntu 13.10.
Could be a good idea to post your question as a wished feature somewhere on LibreOffice forums I think.
