Libre Office 260125 [today date] Problems with Saving Spreadsheets

Dear Libre Office, I am continually having trouble with saving spreadsheets. After I save them, the next time I try to open them, there is something wrong with the stored file.

When you reply, I can send you copies of some of the corrupted files that I had to recreate. JC
Consolidated Bank Recs 24-25.xlsx (4 KB)
Consolidated Cr Cards 2024-25.xlsx (36.9 KB)

Please click Help - About LibreOffice, then click the icon immediately after Version information to copy the details (if you are on LibreOffice 6.x or below, you can select and copy the details directly from About LibreOffice dialogue). Paste the details on your question by clicking the pencil icon to open for editing.

This file also is saved as .xlsx? Try saving as .ods and reopening.

Dear EarnestAl, I uploaded 2 files that got corrupted. I do not get an error message when I save the files.

I am at the library. When I try to open them here using Excel I get : "Excel cannot open the file “Consolidated Bank recs 24-25.xlsx because the format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.” I get a similar error message when I try to open the files at home using Libre Office.

I am using Excel when at the library and Libre Office at home. But these two files are only used once a month at home using LibreOffice.

Dear LeroyG. These 2 files, and all other Libre Spreadsheets I have, are always saved as xlsx because I may have to open them somewhere where only Excel is available. I don’t want to store thme as ODS and the change them.

If they have an updated Excel, then can open ODS files.

Looking at the files with 7-Zip, they are incomplete. I suspect that these files are being saved to a USB stick and the USB has not been properly unmounted before being removed. If you save to a USB the computer might cache the save and not write it to USB until it feels like it; if the USB drive is removed in this state the file will be damaged.
.
Always click the Safely remove icon, probably on the taskbar of your Windows XP (?) computer, and wait until it OKs before pulling the drive out. Note that USB drives do wear out so I might be that too.

If the files has private data, edit your question, and delete them.

It is possible to open* the first three subfiles sheetn.xml of Consolidated Cr Cards, but sheet4.xml is corrupted or truncated at some level.
The subfile sheet1.xml of Consolidated Bank Recs 24-25 is corrupted or truncated at some level.

*All data is there, but in xml format; not easy to read/understand, but possible.

Dear EarnestAl, You are correct about my storage procedures. My routine is to store all my working documents on my USB. I move the USBs from one computer, usually using the eject option, to another computer, or the library computers. I back up the USB daily to my hard drive. I do most of my work at home on 3 different computers, but I do my internet at the library so as to protect the 3 business computers from any threat.

The only time I do not use ‘eject’ for the USB is when I have put a computer in ‘hibernate’ stage and it is not powered up.

I have been using my USB this way for 15 years with no problems. I have been using Open Office for 13 years with no problems. but since I started using Libre office, I have had the problem with corrupted files.
