When I open a new file it always goes behind other windows and I cannot easily get it to come the the front. Is there a work-around to prevent this when opening a new file? This happens with both write and calc.

Check this Q&A for discussion of ForceFocusAndToFront advanced configuration which might be a problem in your case (in the mentioned Q&A, it’s the other way round).
