LO Impress does not playback any video file formats if inserted into a slide - only sounds from the same

I am using the latest version of LibreOffice (v. 24.8.4.2) on the Windows 10_64 Bit platform. I have tried inserting all types of video formats like *.mov, *.mkv, *.flv, and *.mpg (which were all rejected by LO Impress as unsupported formats) - so I tried *.wmv, *.avi, *.mpeg (which were inserting the video into the slide, BUT I could only hear the sound of the video and not see the flow of the video picture at all).

I really need a video to play in one of my slides of a very important presentation that I have prepared and I am rather disappointed that NO video file (of those LO Impress supports) is able to play as a normal video while embedded in the slide.

I have also tried inserting / ebedding my external video file as an OLE Object but that did not work either.

Please advise me on (1) which video formats are accepted by LO Impress for insertion into presentation slides and (2) how to get the video and audio to play simultaneously from this file after inserting the same into a slide using INSERT-MEDIA- in the LO Impress program.

PS. : I have seen earlier similar queries posted on this forum which were dated way back in 2018 up to 2022, but there were no conclusive solutions given regarding this video playback issue in LO Impress. I presume the latest versions of the program may have offer a solution.

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Insert Video in Impress Presentation on LibreOffice

Hi @Hrbrgr,

Thank you for your inputs BUT sorry to say nothing has worked so far.

I have installed DirectShow drivers for Windows 10, I have installed the K-Lite Full Codec pack, I have tried all types of VDO formats for the one VDO file that I desire to be played from within my LO Impress presentation slide (*.avi, *.flv, *.m4v, *.Mkv, *.mov, *.mov, *.mpg, *.mpeg, *.wmv - are there any more ?? :grinning:).

However, at 1st. install of ONLY the .avi format into the presentation slide using LO Impresss menu command : INSERT-MEDIA-.avi did the VDO file commence paying AS A VIDEO from within the slide. However, on retrying this again the same VDO file refused to play from within the same slide and ONLY SOUNDS could be heard but NO VIDEO PICTURE could be seen the second time round.

I feel that a more permanent solution is required to circumvent this problem.

Thanks.

Pleasealso note that I have now upgraded the LO software on my Windows 10 Pro x64-Bit laptop to :
Version: 25.2.0.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: ddb2a7ea3a8857aae619555f1a8743e430e146c9
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10 X86_64 (10.0 build 19045); UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-IN (en_IN); UI: en-GB
Calc: CL threaded

And all the above mentioned trials in LO Impress were conducted by me using this version of LibreOffice.
FYI.

Hi, download the first file from Sample WMV files download | File Examples Download, embed it into an empty impress document, and check if it is playing in slide show mode. This is the most native windows format
Good luck ms777

Hi there @ms777,

Thank you for your input. However, although I was not able to download the *.wmv sample files using the link given by you, I did try to insert other *.wmv files into the LOImpress slide - BUT alas nothing works, and I am still back to square 1 experiencing the same problem in playing the embedded/inserted Videos directly from the slide.

Lately, I did install the “K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1875_Mega” program - and rebooted my laptop, but LOImpress did not show any signs of improvement to alleviate the problem

As a control measure I, thereafter, accessed Microsoft 365 online and embedded *.wmv, *.mp4 and *.mpg files into the Powerpoint online software - and the video played immediately from within the presentation slide giving smooth sound and video quality on my laptop.

I feel confident that the LibreOffice developers will look into this anamoly at the earliest and bring about a solution in the upcoming versions of LOImpress.

Thank you again.

… if you are not able to download video files from the internet I believe you have severe limitiations in access and execution rights on your computer. You are probably better served with online services like Microsoft 365.
Good luck,
ms777

  1. this is not a place for developers
  2. this appears to be an issue on your PC, not with LibreOffice in general. For me with K-Lite standard, it works perfectly, I can just drag a video on to the Impress page, or click Insert > Media > Audio or Video.

Check in your anti virus and anti ransomware settings that nothing is blocked.

Click Tools > Media player and open the intended video file (try first with the wmv file used in your PowerPoint file). Does it play? If not then the issue lies with the codecs. Try downloading and installing K-Lite again. Check the codecs are installed and not blocked by Windows or by anti virus.

I would not use an experimental version of LibreOffice (25.2.0.1 ) to test something that isn’t working for you. You won’t know if it is a bug in a new version or the problem that you are trying to solve.

Hello @EarnestAl,

Thank you for your advice. It seems to be very sound and yes, i do agree that there could be issues as regards my antivirus settings which I will definately check, as well the fact that my present use of a BETA version of LO (25.2.0.1) may not be the right thing to use - so maybe I will downgrade to the stable LO version 24.8.3.2 and recheck if it works - starting with the *.wmv VDO file format first.

After all, if it works for you - it sure should work for me as well, God willing.

Please accept my best wishes to you for a prosperous New Year 2025.
