Loosing created database files

Libra Office Data base creator. I have just started to create a Libra Office database and having a problem. I created a new DB and started by designing a form layout I have in mind. (Not using the wizard)

I am fairly OK with computers so of course I name and save this test file. I must admit to being a bit puzzled with the ‘Save’ sequence but think (or thought) I had done it OK. I saved it to my Desktop and the icon appeared just fine. See illustration showing just two of the icons.

However, suddenly the form being designed disappears and the opening screen of the Database appears asking me to choose etc. from here. See the screenshot attached. I just can’t get back the screen with the form I’m designing. So far as I can make out my previously part designed forms have been lost as I can’t find them what ever I do. I’m now on Ver 4 of my form and so far as I can see all the previous versions have vanished.

Can anyone explain what’s happened and what have I done wrong please. Can anyone help with my problem please. I’ve down-loaded and installed V4 of the Libra Office suite and all appears to be well. I’m running Win 10.
Many thanks. Pete

Btw, the name is LibreOffice, not Libra Office.

The application crashed before you saved the form to the containing document AND the document to your Desktop folder.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I really should have known better. It’s my age you know.

Thanks for your reply. I understand most - but not all. I was interested that you say the programme ‘crashed’ before I had properly saved. I am so used to doing ctl+s every few seconds. (Bitter experience!) As stated to instruction to save were a little bit puzzling to me when going to ‘save’. Is there something I could have done to cause these crashes? The Use of the programme is totally new to me as already mentioned.

I will make a totally fresh start today and see what happens and will report back on my finding if need be.

I hope you won’t mind me mentioning, but I’m aged 88 and not quite so sharp as I used to be.

Thanks again for your reply. Pete

I have no idea what happened with your Base document. If you want to get your feet wet with Base, go to Apache OpenOffice Community Forum - Database Examples - (View forum) and try some of these.
On the same site you find Base tutorials: Apache OpenOffice Community Forum - Base - (View forum)

The official manual for the LibreOffice Base component is the most complicated handbook of all component handbooks. This is because Base is a relative small and simple addition to this office suite, barely comparable to costly development suites such as Microsoft Access. And “simple” is the opposite of “easy”.
A well made database is user friendly, requires no maintainance other than backups and does its job for many years. However, a well made database is the result of a development process. A Base document is something completely different than any type of office document. A Base document provides access to some 3rd party software. In your particular case it is a Java program named HyperSQL (see status bar of your database window which reads “embedded HSQL”). A Base document may embed Writer documents with input forms and some special text documents serving as reports (layouted, printable excerpts). A Base document is a bridge between an actual database and office documents. Forms are the user interface for convenient input into the connected database. Reports, serial letters and Calc documents are the user interface for formatted, layouted and printable output. The actual database software behind the scenes takes care of the stored data (integrity, completenes, fast access etc.).

Could you first test to create a form by the wizard?
If this works well: Could it be you have saved the form you created without the wizard as a standalone form? This will happen if you choose File → Save copy as …

If you saved the form: Could you see it in the form-pane?
If you could see it there save the database file.
