Math formula across multiple lines and formatting

Good Morning,

Trying to help my son with math. This would give me an opportunity to lean the formular editor. I started with his first problem, the square root of 121*x^2. Here is what i started with:

So the first issue for me is how to get to the next line to make the next step of the formula solution? The enter button doesn’t mean anything here, it just keeps going on the same line. Also how to decrease the spacing betwen the x and the superscript 2?

Displays as expected here under 24.8.4.2 in Fedora 41 KDE Plasma desktop.

I suspect you have a non standard spacing. I can reproduce it only if I add many ~ before the 2. Attach your document for analysis.

Usually, Math is used to create short single-line formulas to be inserted in other documents (Writer or Impress are the main candidates) because there are textual explanations between these formulas.

If you really insist, the directive to go to next line is newline.

The Math Guide is available here

In case of Windows 11, the Help with Weird Spacing Equation Editor topic still seems to be relevant.

I followed the suggestion. Decided to change the font to lucida sans, and it looks fine. And newline works as well.
