[SOLVED] Changing number format of Endnotes and Footnotes

Hello,
I have two very similar issues in LibreOffice 5.2.2.2 :

1. Footnotes (at base of page) are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc… Those numbers are continuously incremented across pages throughout my Writer documents.
   I want them to be numbered i, ii, iii, iv, or alternatively a, b, c, d, etc., restarting at ‘i’ with each new page.

2. Endnotes are numbered i, ii, iii, etc.
   I want them to be numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. and if possible the endnote reference in text to show as [1], [2], [3], etc.

I have looked at Menu: Styles > Styles and Formatting (F11) > Footnote and > Endnote, followed by contextual menu “modify” but I could not find the corresponding setting to be modified.

I want to apply the two above modifications permanently to all my documents. present and to come.
Can anybody help? -ced

Not clear what the update is since you didn’t prefix it with something like EDIT… If the added question is the last paragraph, create a template with your customisation and use this template as the basis for your future documents.

Back porting the customisation in existing document is a bit trickier and it depends heavily on your usage of styles. If you format your document with toolbar buttons (this is called direct formatting oe “a la Word”), there’s little hope outside manual editing. Otherwise, you can retrospectively base your documents on a template with the Template Changer extension.

Tools → Footnotes/endnotes. There (you have one tab for footnotes and one for endnotes) you can change the numbering, how they need to be counted (by document, chapter or page), etc.

EDIT:

For the second problem, the only workaround is to use the Linux Libertine G font with the “circ=2” parameter. That’s it, on the font name for the character style used to the “anchor” of the notes, write

Linux Libertine G:circ=2

This way a Graphite substitution will be activated and numbers will be displayed between parenthesis.

Thank for your good answer. However I would like to effect those changes permanently across all my future documents. Haw is this done in practice ? Through the correct change of styles in templates or is there a more direct way to permanently modify the default settings for that ?

You only need to create a template from one working document and then set that template as the default one. Everything you need is under File → Template.

Question 2: unfortunately, you can have [1] in the note section of the page through the Before and After parameters in the Tools → Footnotes/Endnotes dialog, but not in the reference in the text.

This is an LO shortcoming. A possible workaround could be to use bibliographic entries, but I guess this is tricky (because you distort a feature which has another purpose) and I have not explored the path.

Excellent. Thank you very much for the nudge. It is exactly what I needed.
But can I make sure that that is permanently changed across all my future documents ?
