Struggling to create a simple scenario

I just want to use 4 different figures to insert in a cell to calculate energy costs based on different usage.
I have managed it in the past but now cannot seem to select correctly. I don’t really understand the Libre office help for this and the copy back and protect check boxes are a bit of a mystery.

I have the following usages; Average, Median, Maximum and Minimum and want to use those to calculate the energy costs based on those different usages by selecting them in a cell to do the calculation.

Can anyone please put me on the right track.

  1. Enter the figures in A1:D1, select A1:D1, call Tools>Scenarios… and enter some name.
  2. Clear A1:D1, select A1:D1, call Tools>Scenarios… enter some name like “Blank Scenario” and uncheck “Copy back”.

When you modify the first scenario, the changes are saved as you see when switching to the second and back to the first. The blank one is not saved. It remains blank. You may use it for new scenarios. Just fill out the blank scenario and create a new one with another name.
Scenarios are editable even on protected sheets unless you check the “Prevent changes”. On unprotected sheets, this flag has no effect.

I followed the instructions but could not achieve the result described.
After step 2 the cells A!:D1 were blank whichever scenario was called.

The result I am trying to achieve is shown in the attached sample spreadsheet.
I want the coloured cell to pick up the figures for each of the different consumption figures by creating a scenario for each.
Elswhere in my workbook I managed to achieve this but seem unable to repeat the process. I can’t seem to fill the blank cell with the scenario figure.[quote=“Athespian, post:1, topic:96751, full:true”]

There is no scenario in your file.

No. That’s because I haven’t been able to create it and why I am seeking assistance to do so.
I have stated the intention for the scenario but my attempts to create it have failed unfortunately.

I selected the 4 cells and called Tools>Scenario. That’s it.
Oh, and I inserted a row above, because the drop down covered the label cells.

The scenario you have created does not separate out each of the options and does not fill in the cell I want to use coloured blue B8.
I need 4 scenarios that include the cell B8 in your amended sheet. or B7 on mine. Adding a row above was a good idea though.
I tried creating a scenario for each of the figures selecting for scenario 1 A4 and B8, scenario 2 B4 and B8, scenario 3 C4 and B8 and scenario 4 D4 and B8. In none of those cases did B8 get filled with the numbers from the row 4.

Do you want that?

Yes it is thank you. But how is it done since I need to reproduce the same again?

When I have done it previously the scenario box has also appeared against the figures entered on row 3.
Somewhere in Create scenario it mentions having to select at least two cells.

I notice that apart from the border no check boxes are selected in the scenario.

Select the cells in question.
menu:Tools>Scenarios…
Keep defaults, click OK.
One scenario makes no sense.
Select the same range and create another one.
Now you have 2 sets of the same cell range.
Edit one and switch to the other one, then back to the edited one.
Data of a scenario without “copy back” option are editable but the changes are not saved when you switch to another scenario. This can be useful when you need to preserve some default data set.

Please elaborate what exactly you are not understanding, maybe the help could be improved.

In general, a scenario is created as Create Scenario and Using Scenarios line out: select the cells that are to be part of the scenario (i.e. will change values), create scenario with Tools → Scenarios. When done, enter new values or formulas in the scenario cells, again select cells that are to be part of the new scenario and create another scenario. You can then switch between scenarios.

Editing scenario cells can copy the new values to the currently active scenario. The Copy back property controls whether that will happen or not. If not activated, the original scenario values will stay unmodified.

The Prevent changes option is indeed a bit unclear… it affects edit-ability of scenario cells if the sheet is protected and cells are not protected and I think the wording in the help does not properly reflect reality and that would need an alignment of help text to what actually happens.
