How do I switch off capital I automation? I.e., I type “i”, but it’s converted to a capital “I”. Yes, I do have LO in English, and type in another language that does not have that grammar feature. I have tried to switch offTools: AutoCorrect: AutoCorrect Options...: Options: Capitalize first letter of every sentence, but that probably handles something else.
Try removing the i -> I replacement under Tools | Autocorrect | Replace.
I do not have a Replace option there. Plus, I wonder if this may influence only the actual document, so if I would like to switch it off for all future documents, I would need to edit it elsewhere.
Is that permanent or just for the actual document?
The change I suggested is global.
But only for the language indicated in the field at the top. If you use other languages then you might have make the change for each language in the Replace dialogue. If you made the change for English (UK) then English (USA) would still change i to I . AFAIK English (New Zealand) still does not have any replacement words populated in Autocorrect but the spelling is the same as English (UK)
And that language equals the language of the app, or why is there a language selector in here?
Because you can write a multi-language document. And document languages can also be distinct from UI language. Consequently, you need to explicitly tag the sequences so that spell-checking and other AutoCorrect actions work fine.
Well, maybe my above problem arises from using LOW the wrong way. My system language is English, but I am editing in Czech, so I probably have to switch language before editing in a language other than English.

However, the tool named AutoCorrect ist mostly an AutoMessup.
Study the options thoroughly, and disable most of them.
(Capitalze ... e.g. is dangerous.)
Personally I only have enabled the replacement table (with very few entries), and URL recognition.
If you want to use a replacement table, make sure that all the replacements you do not wish, are deleted.
BTW: I’m a german living in germany. My UI Is English(UK), and my locale English(Canada).
I get the i==>I no longer (neither in 7.5.4 nor in 25.8.4).
Should there still be a replacement you don’t want, You can create an item in the replacment table like "replace i with i" for your example. (Years ago I had such a case. Don’t remember the details.)

Personally I disabled most of the automatic features because I prefer to control precisely my document (typing is quite as fast though) and sometimes I find developers’ choices are bad (some of them rather correspond to legacy habits at a time when character sets were limited to 192 printable glyphs and violate typographic rules now that we have Unicode).
IMHO AutoCorrect targets newcomers who don’t take time to read the manual and want immediate results. But when you dig Writer a bit deeper, you come to the conclusion that its tremendous power is better employed in a customised semi-manual mode.
And surely you have a keyboard with the “DoubleAngle” quotation marks which I judge to be the only ones appropriate for Latin-based scripts. I have not.
Understood. Well, I do not need AutoCorrect at all. If I am editing an important document, grammar and typos are corrected anyway, but by another software or a person.
