Does anyone know how to fix the taskbar word counter?
Mine shows “0 words, 0 character” even with a full page written. The floating window word counter works perfectly but distracts me so I would really like to know how to fix this. I even tested with text selected but it’s not it.

Edit your questions after reading these guidelines with LO version and your OS. Taskbar word counter works here (LO 5.3.7.2, Fedora Linux, KDE Plasma desktop).
I assume you are using LO 6.0.3.2.
There have been a number of bugs reported regarding the status bar not updating or being incorrect.
This one is probably closest to your issue.
Bug 117197 - Libre Office Writer does not update characters, words, pages in status bar in version 6 until file is closed and reopened
Try closing the document and reopening.
If that works, you have the same issue.
Then wait for an update/fix.
