Text next to a table

Dear community,

In libreoffice writer 7.1.4.2. x64,

I can’t adapt a table like a picture, nor moving it freely. Also I don’t undersand how to incorporate it in the text in order to have a frame of text all around the table and how to put a little distance between the text and the table.

Best regards and I wish you a happy new year.

Sylvain

Please upload a real, ODF type sample file here. Then we will able to examine the current Anchoring method, and the properties of the applied Styles.

Insert a frame (menu Insert - Frame - Frame…/Frame interactively), and put the table inside it. This will allow the text to flow around the table (that is within the frame).

Again, the table extends from left to right across the entire frame. You can move the cursor to the separator line between the columns so that the cursor changes its shape (horizontal double arrow) and drag the line to the right or left. It is best to start with the right column.

For the distance between the outer frame and the body text: click the frame so that it is marked. Select “Properties” and the tab “Wrap”, at “Spacing” set the distance between frame and body text.

For spacing between inner table cells and the text inside them:
Click in the table and select “Table properties”. In the “Borders” tab, set the “Padding” for the cells to the text inside them.

And you probably guessed it, for the spacing between the table and the frame:
Click the frame and choose “Properties”. On the “Borders” tab, set the “Padding”.

To make the text flow past the frame on the left, click the frame and choose “Properties”. In the “Frame” dialog, select “Wrap|Settings” → “Before” so that the text flows past the frame on the left.

You can’t because unlike a frame (the container for an image) a table extend from margin to margin.

You can change the global width of a table but this creates some unusable lateral area left and right of the table (this space can be changed so that you position the table left, center or right in the page but can’t be used for anything else, like text).

You can easily add spacing above or below the table.

All these settings lie in the Table tab of Table>Properties dialog.

Adding a caption to the table doesn’t create a frame (as in the case of images) you could then constraint the way you like.
