Typing Lag In Both Newest And Newest Stable

I have a fairly standard document (Aside from 300cm page length (no this is not the issue)), and I have tried everything to fix. I have reinstalled my OS (Had corrupted files, needed to anyways, this happened before and after though), messed with safe mode OpenGL, Skia, a bunch of other random settings, and nothing works as a fix longer then approximately 30 seconds.

Edit because I wrote this just before going to bed after going insane trying to fix this issue for like a fourth time:
Basically, if I open a new file, the typing lag seems to be fine, and I don’t really have a large file other then the offending file to look at.

When I have this file open, it has about 500ish ms of typing lag. It’s not consistent, sometimes it’ll be generally around that time or longer, and sometimes it’ll kind of buffer inputs and then dump a bunch of characters much faster then I typed them. Hilariously, clicking around is not affected, so I can hit a key to type in part A, click to part B, and the character magically appears a split second later in part B.

I’ve got Windows 10 (Latest, I presume), updated drivers (or at least they were when I had this issue earlier), currently I’m fairly certain I have 7.6.2, but I might have 7.5.8, but I have this issue in both. I’ve got 16 gigs of ram, a Ryzen 7 2700X, a GTX1650, and nothing particularly demanding open in the background, usually at most a dozen firefox tabs, one with a youtube video, discord, steam, and Medal (game clipping software, but I don’t have a game open, so that’s not actually particularly chugging specs unless task manager is lying to me), and closing all of these programs sometimes helps for a bit, before the lag quickly returns. As far as I can tell, the lag is not dependant on what keys I’m using

This is a .ODT file, and I haven’t actually touched anything other then writer, because I just wanted a writing program that isn’t made by microsoft or google and it doesn’t completely irrecoverably corrupt any open files when I turn off my PC.

The only real hotkey automation software is an autoclicker that doesn’t autoboot and as far as I know got wiped when I reinstalled my OS.

So what is the problem? Please edit your question (=modify it to improve the description, don’t use a comment). Start by the beginning by naming your OS and LO version. Is the document saved as .odt?

Describe accurately what’s happening in which context.

And forgive me because I didn’t pass the mind-reading exam. So, I need a matter-of-fact description to attempt to help.

Aside from the obvious things already mentioned by @ajlittoz, some additional details may help us to pin down the cause of your issue. E.g.:

  • How pronounced is the lag? 1/4 second or half a minute? Always about the same, or different for different letters/keys?
  • Does this happen only in Writer, or do you notice typing lag in other apps (LibreOffice apps and other)?
  • Do you have accessibility functions (those integrated in OS, or third party apps) activated to mitigate disability issues?
  • Do you have hotkey automation software (AutoHotKey or the like) installed?

Edited now, thanks

Russian roulette. The program has no control any more when operating system shuts down. You should always close LibreOffice before shutting down to allow it to do its housekeeping.

In Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View, I would tick the box Force Skia software rendering

If Windows is Restarted and nothing else is open except LibreOffice with the file, is there still a lag?

Then work your way through the steps in https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-keyboard-lag-in-windows-10 , but take care not to click on ads.

LibreOffice seems to have functioning features to not do it every time at least, and I’ve been doing my best to keep that habit in mind, just annoying that text editing software of all programs is the one to have this issue.

Trying it again, forcing skia does not work, even when in safe mode. Some programs for some reason this time booted in safe mode, but I checked the entire list of running programs in task manager and killed anything stupid.

I am hesitant to try anything at the link, since typing this to you right now, I have very minimal typing lag. This seems like a solution for typing lag on the entire system, but I never had any additional lag on top of my normal keyboard for any other program (barring general lag), and this is a fairly high quality logitech keyboard with very very low input delay.

If there is no lag now but other times then I would suspect something else. Streaming services, gaming platforms need priority over other programs and that might cause the lag.

I recommend to either force Skia software rendering in case of unexplained issues. Skia uses the graphics card’s processing power but if the the graphics card is not fully compatible with Skia then strange things can happen; forcing software rendering removes the processing from the graphics card but still improves performance over merely turning off Skia.

What I meant was that there’s no lag typing now in the forums, the program is still lagged, sorry for the confusion

It is very likely unrelated; but I wanted to mention, that some specific GTK-based apps running on Windows may cause severe typing lag. When I run gtktiledviewer app on my system, the typing lag is so severe, it is highly likely to overflow typing buffer, and drop parts of the text I typed, before it gets to the target application.

I am unsure of how I would see if that’s a potential issue, and that seems like it is something that is system wide, which likely would not help unfortunately

Edit:
Before you consider my comment, look at @ajlittoz’ comment to your “answer”. Long paragraphs take lots of processing, and AFAIK Writer does not utilize parallel processing to any great extent. His suggestion is far more likely than mine to lead to a solution.

Shot in the dark:
I see that your filename is fairly long and contains a comma. Those things may indirectly contribute to your issue, if you have cloud sync activated.

  • At least for Microsoft’s OneDrive, the comma in filename causes a sync problem.
  • Also, there may be a limit to “total path length” in OneDrive (255 characters last time I checked, but I heard that they would increase it).
If you have a habit of creating long names also for folders, and create folder structures with multiple levels of subfolders, this may easily become an issue.

While your issue is not around saving and cloud storage, continued sync attempts may reserve messaging resources for sufficient periods that it becomes noticeable.

Also, with every new version of Windows it has become less and less obvious where you say “no thanks” to the OneDrive sync at install time. By default it is enabled.

The issues mentioned most likely result from limitations in the file system in use in the cloud. With high volume traffic, performance must be balanced against user friendliness. Hence, these issues may also be present when other cloud storage providers are involved, IDK.

As mentioned, this is a shot in the dark. I do not know that you have OneDrive running (though I suspect that you may have). Also, I do not have intimate knowledge of Windows’ internal messaging resource management or whether this also pertains to keyboard input/text output.

While ultimately it was ajilttoz’s answer, these are some pretty nice suggestions for other users who actively use one drive who happen to stumble across this thread looking for help, since I’ve not seen this on other threads, so thanks for this.

Posting as a comment because I straight up cannot remember how to edit, and this seems to be a solution. I have copy and pasted all of the text to a new file with what I can tell identical settings. Despite this, the text is wrapping differently (It cuts off later, the UI at the top says the margins should cause it to cut off sooner, and the format settings say they’re the same).

The important thing is that, for now, it seems to be working. I do not know if this is because in the two reformatting due to the formerly mentioned file corruption (not that I reformatted corrupt ones, just that I had to switch from Wordpads proprietary to something I can’t remember for openoffice, finally to what libre uses). Either way, I am going to straight up write off the old file, and just use this new virtually identical file. I will upload a copy of the file for anyone who wants to try to dissect in case an issue like this comes up later, but for now, I am going to wipe my hands of this issue, and move on.

Thanks to everyone in this thread who offered help, even though I needed a kick in the teeth to edit the post to something workable.

Edit from five minutes later: God has cursed me for my hubris, and my work is never finished. For some ungodly reason, I was tempted by a false salvation, for this fix worked for approximately two minutes, before returning with the same fury it had before. I am truly losing my mind at this point, because I was so convinced that everything was working now, yet alas, it was not meant to be. I even tried running the document again with only standard windows autoboot stuff in the background after a restart of my PC, and yet even that was not enough to calm the lag back down. I am now starting to wonder if it is other things, such as the custom font I ripped from word that I dared use for all of about 10 words

I urge you to enable View>Formatting Marks if you have not done it yet.

You’ll see then that your text only contains a handful of paragraphs instead of hundreds. The cause is a confusion (an abuse?) of linebreaks (displayed as a left pointing angled arrow) instead of using paragraph marks (displayed as a pilcrow, a kind of mirrored P).

Line break is generated by Shift+Enter while a paragraph separator is just Enter.

This error creates overlong paragraphs and this could explain the lag, considering also that the text is exclusively direct formatted, putting a considerable stress on text rendering.

Your first task is to reconstruct the normal structure of paragraphs by replacing these line breaks by paragraph marks:

  1. open Edit>Find & Replace
  2. in Find:, enter \n (reverse solidus + letter n)
  3. in Replace:, enter \n
It may sound crazy to replace by the same thing but the pattern \n is interpreted differently in both fields. It is considered a linebreak in Find and a paragraph mark in Replace.
  4. tick Regular expressions in Other options
  5. Replace All
Be patient, it takes a looooong time to make the changes.

Your second task is to style your paragraphs. The first one is probably a Title; the one beginning with “Crows Fly Over …” a Heading 1; “New Stuff” a Heading 2; “A Strange Name” a Heading 1 again. If your headings are at some higher levels, use higher styles in the Heading n family. All other paragraphs should be Body Text (Text Body if your LO release is lower than 7.6).

When this is done, select the whole text (Ctrl+A) and clear direct formatting with Ctrl+M. This will reveal the formatting set by the styles. If you don’t like it, modify the styles. This will instantly affect all paragraphs concerned by the style.

Also if you need to emphasise a word here and there, don’t use direct formatting. Rather apply a character style.

If all this discourse about styles (the main tool to format text in Writer) sound Klingon to you, I recommend you read the Writer Guide to get an introduction.

I’ll be honest, for the line break thing, I used them instead of paragraphs because discord doesn’t let you just hit enter, and because the paragraph breaks always seemed weird to me. All this editing advice is good though, and I’ll just see how to edit the gap between paragraphs, and see if that fixes the lag by editing this post at some point tonight. Also, part of my issue using character styles is that the font I’m using looks bad without being bold, at least to my eyes, but I should just find a new font

Also yes, the absurdity of finding something it and replacing it with something identical is not lost on me, but I’ve learned not to question writing software anymore because they all seem to be extremely tempermental

Edit after testing: This seems to be the final solution to the lag problem, it has been going strong for half an hour now with zero typing lag
