Would a foss alternative to onenote be on the cards?

I know many people who hesitate about replacing Office simply because of the lack of an alternative for one note. Similarly I’ve noticed a few times when this issue has been raised on distro websites many people point to alternatives that are really not comparable (such as tomboy).

The one project I saw working towards this goal was Basket but sadly this project seems to have fallen into a development black hole. With that in mind (and with the existing possibilities of libreOffice) I could see it being the natural home for this type of program.

I would LOVE to see a LibreNote!

There are currently no plans to extend the scope of LibreOffice to cover OneNotes features. As the integration of such an application gains little from a close integration with the existing applications, there is no reason for such an application not to be developed standalone as has been done – not only by Tomboy:

That said, this does not preclude a sponsor from contributing to implement such functionality being welcomed, but current volunteer and corporate sponsors show little interest given the available alternatives.

I started out with tuxcards and then migrated to basket. I’ve found basket to be a bit much for me. I’ve been using nixnote but found this app recently. It looks really interesting

“there is no reason for such an application not to be developed standalone”
I agree that a standalone OneNote equivalent is not needed in Libre, but it would be great to have at least some of the tab functionality for organising files built into the Writer. OneNote has a major failing, it does not support footnotes. A word processing product combining footnotes and simple visual tabs to help organise notes would win over many students, academics, writers and scientists over.

The biggest problem of the alternatives to Microsoft OneNote is that they are compatible with Microsoft OneNote.
Then the file Microsoft OneNote (. One) can be opened only from Microsoft OneNote (for Windows, IOS, Android, Online)

@simo, do you mean “The biggest problem of the alternatives…is that they are incompatible with Microsoft OneNote” ?

Hi, do not completely agree with bjoern-michaelsen: as the tablet era starts, a functionality like Microsoft’s Onenote is in my opinion mandatory on such devices. Additionally LibreOffice should provide native touch and pen input support!

Cheers.

Hi @jml, Regarding pen support: Any plan regarding pen support?

You can try Beesy.me. It’s an all-in-one web app for productivity , more or less like oneNote but with more features like collaborative notes and projects. There is a free version but also some paid options (never bought yet) .
