Have done some relatively simple conditional formatting, saved the file as either xlt or xls but each time it is closed out and reopened the conditional formatting is gone, nothing left in “manage” rules area as well, does anyone have any clues as to retaining this formatting ?

You should always save your work in the native format of the program you are using. For Calc that is .ods. Only use other formats (especially proprietary ones) when you have to exchange your work with others. Please see the answers to this question :
Thanks for the input, I suspected the conditional formatting wont be recognized when resaving for use by others in xls but such is life.
