Since Bangla numbers look strictly decimal to my eye there should be a way. However, if your numbers in spreadsheet cells actually are of type ‘Text’ the SUM() function and the statistical functions will completely ignore them.
As here mostly ‘Westerners’ are contributing, few contributors will know about specifics of Bangla, Hindi … and other ‘Eastern’ numerals. Please supply a sample SHEET showing what you want to do. Edit your question to do so, and use the tool inconised as a paper-clip for the purpose. (Don’t use the ‘Answer’ feature as long as you don’t answer your own question.)
===Edit1 after a first look into the example:===
What you suppose to be numbers is treated as text, and in one case there is even a trailing space.
The digits used writing the numbers are from the unicode range U+09E6 through U+09EF. In addition the “western” decimal point is used (U+002E). I would need the character used for signs in addition. No signed example included (Why?).
Based on the example sheet and my very limited knowledge I can write a conversion function, but I don’t know direct support in LibO for numbers written this way, in specific no way to get them recognised as numbers when entered/imported/edited.
An extremely inefficient conversion based on standard functions of LibreOffice Calc (V5.3.4 or higher) is demonstrated in this reworked example.
But:
What’s so bad with global usage of the same set of digits? We cannot change the historical fact of hundreds of languages in the world. We could, however, negotiate standards concerning some specialties needed in global communication. Numerical data should probably not be subject to “localised human stubbornness”. In my country we are teached that what we call “Arabic digits” originated “in India” and were brought to the west through the Arabic civilisation. However, there was a long time during which the shapes developed, and finally a western version of the West-Arabic digits was spread all over the world. Why not keep this as at least one valuable togetherness?
I’m afraid I should quit contributing to this thread. Too little knowledge. Too little disposition to help split the world another time. I really feel bad about this.
Hopefully at least flight control will stick to globally used terms. Or will we need “AI” next year to accomplish any banality?
