Line Spacing in Writer (for Windows)

I just downloaded LO 6.4.3.2 as an alternative to MS Office. Calc is just great, I’m finding, but Writer seems to ignore specs of one particular font, which I have to use in some work. Specifically, with single line spacing, Writer is squashing lines of text so closely together that descenders touch the next line’s ascenders… Which is not even possible looking at the metrics of the font itself, there’s no case where one letter could touch anything below…

Is there a way to correct this without resorting to an artificial fixed value? Since the same font/size/spacing in Word and other programs produces normal text, I don’t see why I need anything bigger than single line spacing in Writer. I’m a newbie with LO so maybe I’m overlooking some other line formatting tools. Or could this just be a bug in 6.4.3.2?

Thanks.

Thanks for your answers. Not sure why Writer is ignoring the font properties and needs 1.5 spacing in the first place. I’ll guess I have stick to to Word (unfortunately!) since it handles this font correctly. Appreciate your time though.

You are using a font named Scotia. It is not present on my Linux box. It is then replaced by another one. The problem you describe does not occur. It is probably related to the font itself. If the metrics parameters are not correctly set, you’ll experience this.

I’ve already met differences between Word and Writer on this issue. Word seems to apply its interpretation of the metrics when it deems them incorrect for its use, while Writer takes the metrics as is, considering the font designer made deliberate choices.

Noted, but he metrics of this font are all correct, pretty standard in fact vs similar style fonts. And it’s been well tested, not just in Word but in LaTex docs but non-doc applications like CAD, Inkscape, really everything we use. Line spacing just isn’t an issue anywhere outside of Writer. I have seen complaints about font rendering in Writer, and see it in my test docs, so maybe Writer’s font problems extend to formatting too?

The line spacing and font, font type and size etc. are set in Libreoffice using style sheets / paragraph styles.
Normally the default paragraph style is the “default style”.

Right-click on a style to change it.

You can also create new styles by choosing “New”.

This is a very nice management and should always be used.

A paragraph template is assigned by placing your cursor in the desired paragraph and double-clicking on the paragraph template.

It is recommended to always work with paragraph styles and not with direct formatting.
