Base: field decoration (colour, border, …) in reports?

LO 5.3.7.2/Fedora 26 and LO 5.4.3.2/Fedora 27

When laying out/editing fields with the report generator, drop-down menu for background colour is disabled (grayed out). Background colour is then locked on "Automatic".

To work around this limitation, I insert a shape for which I can choose fill colour (but I can't change anything to its border), overlay it on the field rectangle and send it behind. This simulates the "decoration" attributes for the field but, strangely, it cancels any vertical alignment for the field, forcing it to Top. Another annoyance is you can't have transparent colour in shapes in order to keep only the outline.

I gave up this workaround.

I then tried to tweak the generated Writer document, but it looks like the cell in the "translated" table can't be individually selected and background or borders are applied to the table as a whole.

  1. How can I define a background colour for fields without disturbing other settings?
  2. How can I request a border around a field (and, if possible, vary its attributes like thickness and colour)?

When laying out/editing Layout for fields with (or labels) in the report generator, drop-down menu for generator only offers background colour. Under certain circumstances, such as printing on a pure B/W printer, colour filling is disabled (grayed out). Background colour inappropriate (risk of hiding the relevant information, even with dithering). In such a case, a border is then locked on "Automatic".

To work around this limitation, I insert a shape for which I can choose fill colour (but I can't change anything enough to its border), overlay it on the field rectangle and send it behind. This simulates the "decoration" attributes for the field but, strangely, it cancels any vertical alignment for the field, forcing it to Top. Another annoyance is you can't have transparent colour in shapes in order to keep only the outline.

In such a case, a border is enough to draw attention without obscuring data.

If I insert a rectangular shape (same size, transparent content to keep only the outline, its "border" and send it behind the field, a nasty interaction betwen the field and the shape occurs: field vertical alignment is no longer honored, its reverts to Top.
